Residential Treatment program @ Hinckley
This is a a residential program for up to 25 adolescent boys, providing substance use and mental health treatments, school day education & daily life skills. The program is expanding, hiring more professional staff to add to the already trained staff. This is to make sure that all health and wellness needs of the adolescents is being taken care of. This program aligns with UWMM’s focus area regarding youth and education.
Site Visit/Phone Conversation Notes:
The phone call was brief – it took over 4 calls to get a response, but the site visit was informative. I received a tour of the facilities, spend some time in the education section of the house. The discussion was mostly on the program itself. We did talk about the new program they would like to expand on with the UWMM funding and the need for this programming with the adolescents. The visit was rushed, the original contact person was not available as they work out of Portland, Hinckley home is only one of may units they have around the southern part of the state. The person that offered the tour did not have any specifics to the funding they asked for. As the conversation went on she was able to touch on the new professionals they were hiring and the projected programs they plan to offer.
Offering school classes in house from one of our local school districts.
contact was difficult with anyone at the program

Maybe fund half? I am concerned that it took 4 calls to get a response!

It’s not clear if this is a funding request for Goodwill Hinckley or one of its partners providing the educational/clinical components. This type of model program should have a variety of other funding partners: sending schools/Maine DOE/Maine DHHS/Corrections. What other funding is available and why are they seeking funding from UWMM? I’d support funding half without extra funding information.

Important service. The Day One website provides some answers to outstanding questions, including whether or not the program has any oversight. This seems an incomplete application and it’s difficult to recommend funding without more info about service area, staffing, relationship with Hinckley, other sources of funding, measurements of success.
