Why give to United Way?

We bring people and organizations together to do more together than any of us can do on our own. Together, we tackle some of the toughest issues and creating solutions that make real change toward a culture of caring.

A dollar given to United Way is magnified through resources, volunteer hours, and advocacy, going further to support local nonprofits.

How much of my money goes out to your national office and for administration?

Each year, we pay dues of less than 1% of our total earnings to United Way Worldwide. This allows us to use the United Way logo and colors, receive valuable education and support, and gives us access to cost-saving materials and promotional products. Our relationship with United Way Worldwide helps keep our administrative costs low and ensures that 99% of donated dollars stay right here in Mid-Maine.

17% of our total earnings covers administrative costs, including the salaries of the four locals who make up our staff.

Everything else (that’s 82%, for anyone keeping score) goes to those who need it most: the patrons of our partner agencies and the beneficiaries of our initiatives.

What if I don’t live in this area?

If you pledge to United Way through a workplace campaign, you can designate your preferred location right on the pledge form.

If you’re donating online or through the mail, you can look up the United Way you want to give to here.

What’s a Community Impact Team?

A Community Impact Team (CIT) is a group of volunteers (board members and involved community members) who meet monthly to stay abreast of the current issues affecting our community as well as monitor the progress of our programs and initiatives. United Way of Mid-Maine (UWMM) has three CITs, each one overseeing one of our focus areas: Meeting Immediate Human Needs, Promoting Independence, and Strengthening Children, Youth, and Families. Read about them on our CIT page

What is a Partner Agency?

A Partner Agency is non-profit organization that serves the mid-Maine community and who works closely with United Way to provide direct services that meet the needs of our community. Find out more about Partner Agencies, or how your organization can become a Partner Agency.

Will United Way still let me give directly to my favorite charity?

You can designate your donation to any 501(c)3 nonprofit (you can check at Guidestar if your preferred organization is). Keep in mind that funds not specifically designated will go to areas of greatest need in our local community.

Does United Way support religious agencies?

There are some organizations that provide human care programs that are religiously affiliated. United Way policy prohibits the direct support of churches but does support church-sponsored organizations that are providing social services. United Way funds are directed to those programs of the organizations that serve the community.

No United Way funds are currently used, or have ever been used, to support abortion services. Several local United Way partners provide professional family and individual counseling services, which include professional counseling on pregnancy-related problems.

How do I know United Way is financially accountable for its actions?

We pride ourselves on our integrity (it’s one of the values we live by). We make our annual reports and 990s available online on our accountability page and at our office. We are audited annually by an independent public accounting firm.

I live in _____. Do you serve my area?

We serve all of Somerset county, northern Kennebec county, and western Waldo county. Check out the map. If you live elsewhere in Maine, check out the other United Ways of Maine. For United Ways outside of Maine, check United Way Worldwide.

What kind of impact does United Way have on mid-Maine?

Last year, about 44,000 people in our service area were served by programs and initiatives funded and supported by UWMM. That's 39% of our total service area population of 114,500 people.

But that's not just 44,000 served. That's 44,000 healthier family members, more educated employees, and children with brighter futures. Every person served strengthens our communities throughout Mid-Maine.
